AK-47.net: AK-74m Assault Rifle

The AK-74m is a modification of the AK-74, which it's intended use is for motorized infantry.  The AK-74m was manufactured and designed in Russia by Izhmash Small Arms.  The AK-74m also exists in another variant the AKS-74m which has a side folding stock and was designed for Air-borne troops.

The AK-74m is chambered in 5.45x39 and features black synthetic furniture. The AK-74m has a 18.11 inch barrel with a birdcage style flash suppressor attached to the barrel to control muzzle climb.  The rifle can be fired in three different firing modes; semi, three shot burst and full auto.  The AK-74m can also be used in conjunction with many vehicles as a mounted weapon. The AK-74m disassembles using the same procedure as the AK-74, and is almost an exact copy with exception of the barrel and synthetic stock.  The AK-74m has an optical plate installed on the side of the receiver for attaching scopes and other optical equipment.  The optical plate will accept most types of Russian and European AK optics.  The AK-74m has an effective range of 1000 yards and has a rate of fire of 600rpm.  The rifle will accept most synthetic and metal AK-74 magazines, generally 30 rounds in capacity.

How to construct a clone?

The AK-74m is currently unavailable to the general public in the U.S., however class III dealers may own them.  If you desire a rifle that looks similar to the AK-74m we would suggest that you purchase a W.U.M.-II, C.U.R.-II, MK-II or a SAR-2.  All of which are imported Romanian AK-74s, designed for the civilian market.  The SAR-2 is the only variant that was produced with a pistol grip stock.  If you wish to legally have a pistol grip on your sporterized rifle, you must install a U.S. parts kit.  Since 18 inch barrels are currently unavailable in the U.S. for AK-74 type rifles, you will have to settle for a 24 or 16 inch barrel.  The 16 inch barrel comes with the gun.  If you want the 24 inch barrel, purchase an RPK  kit from Global Trades and have an accomplished gunsmith install it. Make sure you tell them the caliber of your rifle, so they send you the right kit.  You will also need to purchase a synthetic Bulgarian stock kit for the rifle.  AK-74m side folding stocks are currently unavailable in the U.S. and would be in violation of the law if you attached it to a post-ban.

Pros: It is an updated version of the AK-74 and is well made.
Cons: Magazines are limited in the U.S., 75 round drums were not imported into the U.S.
Summery: If you can get your hands on an authentic AK-74m buy it as, they are worth a ton of money.                                      Submit Review
